The course explores how computing cultures and futures (digital networks, data, economies, infrastructures, practices and narratives) are shaped by social movements and place-based communities around the world. We engage with grassroots practices as sites of critical imagination where alternatives to complex problems of our time emerge. It should be of interest for students looking to do information work in non-profits, community-facing institutions, international development agencies, grassroots organizations and the like, as well as for students interested in building cultural awareness. The class will be conducted as an interactive seminar, including lectures, reading discussions, hands-on exercises, and experimental practices.

We will explore how technology can influence a specific aspect of the music industry and culture. The course will build on students’ knowledge of Social Informatics principles, such as the reciprocal nature between societies and technology and non-neutrality.
