Description: Within the span of one semester, students will be given actual samples of undescribed insect species, some background literature, and will collaboratively coauthor a publication to describe them. Students can bring their own undescribed species, or will be provided undescribed Amazonian cockroaches. The course will progress through the following units in order: -Background on taxonomy and species description -compiling background literature on each organism -Lab-based observation and data collection -Writing descriptions -Editing photos, illustrating morphology, and making figures. -Drafting a taxonomic manuscript (time-permitting) -submitting for publication (time permitting)

Section Info:
Offers an exploration of the use of storytelling, role play, cosplay, and improvisation for communicating science. Through a series of lectures, discussions and hands-on activities, students will explore a range of strategies to create science outreach with real impact for the public. Students develop skills in creative thinking, summarizing, and translating technical research papers for general audiences, designing and conducting scientific outreach events for a range of audiences and evaluating the impact of these activities.
