Mapping, Place, and Power
Do maps represent places, or do they create them? In this class, we’ll explore the power of maps and mapping as well as other geospatial technologies. Who makes maps compared to who is mapped? How are places represented through mapping practices, and what difference do those representations make to how we distribute resources and treat the people who live in those places? We’ll draw on the concepts of data feminism to examine and challenge power, rethink binaries and hierarchies, and make the labor of mapping visible in our own projects and beyond.
