German 211 and German 212 are sequenced, advanced German language courses that aim to help students develop greater ease and sophistication in their oral and written expression in German. German 212 covers issues in modern history and contemporary German society through focus on literature, art and film. Students will also read a full-length novel (Bernhard Schlink's Der Vorleser) to develop interpretative skills in German and deepened cultural knowledge of Germany's past. Through the 211-212 course sequence, students will become prepared for advanced coursework in German literature and culture, as well as study in a German-speaking country.
