Students will learn, from an engineer’s point of view, the theory and practice behind safely operating a 2-Axis CNC Turning Center. This course expands on the tooling geometry, speed, and capabilities covered in the manual turning class, ENG 199ML1, as well as part design, toolpath generation using CAD/CAM systems, machine navigation, and special tooling for CNC machines. Students will also turn several test parts within specified tolerances. This course is designed, in part, to help engineers understand manufacturability and processes involved in realizing their designs. Prerequisite: ENG 199 ML1, Intro to Turning for Engineers. Meeting dates will be arranged with instructor. Meets Monday from either 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm or 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm for 12 weeks, Course takes place in the Engineering Senior Design Lab.

TIG Welding for Engineers

Students will learn, from an engineer’s point of view, the theory and practice behind safely operating a TIG welder to create high strength joints in steel. The curriculum covers basic history of electro-arc welding as well as the properties of stick, MIG, and TIG welding. Students will develop the skills to prepare, create, and troubleshoot TIG welds in steel. Students will also weld a test joint to withstand mechanical force testing. This course is designed, in part, to help engineers understand manufacturability and processes involved in realizing their designs. Meeting dates are arranged with instructor. Class meets for two weeks. Week one has lecture Sunday from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm, and hands-on instruction on either Tuesday or Thursday from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Week two has a shorter lecture from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm and identical hands-on instruction times. Course takes place in the Engineering Student Projects Lab.

The curriculum covers the basic methods to design and manufacture parts via waterjet, using integrated OMAX CAD/CAM programming systems, and others. Students will develop the skills to design within machine limitations, adjust machine parameters to improve produced parts, and use secondary finishing tools to refine waterjet-cut parts. Students will also cut a test part within specified tolerances. This course is designed, in part, to help engineers understand manufacturability and processes involved in realizing their designs. Meeting dates will be arranged with instructor on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm for two weeks. Course takes place in the Engineering Senior Design Lab.
