Current Topics in Computing Education Research

Credit: 4 hours.

Current research topics and theories in Computers and Education with an emphasis on learning theories such as constructivism, behaviorism, cognitivism, knowledge-in-pieces, test-potentiated learning, and transfer of learning. These theories will be applied to understanding how students learn computing topics such as programming and theoretical computing. These topics will be applied through the design of ethically responsible educational research studies. The course will culminate in students writing a research proposal or conference-style research paper based upon pilot data.

May be repeated if topics vary. Credit towards a degree from multiple offerings of this course is not given if those offerings have significant overlap, as determined by the CS department.

Section Info:
The course focuses on current research at the intersection of technology and disability and provides students exposure to the theoretical foundations of this work. Students will be asked to apply the theoretical foundations learned in the first few weeks of the course to critique or praise current CS research. Towards the end of the course, students will learn about technical accessibility standards and explore how those standards sometimes still produce a fundamentally unusable technology.

Section Info:
Programming Education in the Age of GenAI. Description: In this course, students will grapple with some of the pressing questions facing the field of programming education since the advent of large language models capable of substantial coding ability. What should programming education look like in this new world, in terms of the outcomes we want to emphasize and the way those are taught? What new possibilities do these models make available for the future of programming education, both for future engineers and other learner groups like youth, end-user programmers, and conversational programmers? Students will read a variety of recent research about Generative AI and computing education, as well as relevant educational and computing education theory. They will apply this understanding of education theory to critique and expand on existing work, ultimately proposing a research study or an educational technology at the intersection of programming education and GenAI.
