This course provides cross-cultural learning experiences within the context of international community-based service learning. Students will explore human service delivery through direct involvement with international social service institutions. This cultural immersion course is a collaborative partnership between the University of Illinois School of Social Work and selected international universities. Countries visited, varies by semester.

May be repeated in separate terms up to 12 undergrad hours if topics vary.

ACADEMIC ENVIRONMENT: This is a hybrid second 8 weeks course, with the option to travel to Brazil in late May 2025. This program is open to any registered UIUC student, Sophomore level or above, including graduate students. OVERVIEW: Students will learn about social justice and health equity models in Brazil and the United States and interact with Brazilian peers in online classes with the option for an on-site visit to Rio de Janeiro. Students will interact with each other in bilingual (English and Portuguese) online classes. Available Terms: Spring 2025 (second 8 weeks) with travel option during May 2025 Dates: • Online classes March 10 to May 15, 2025 (off for Spring Break March 15-23, 2025). • Optional travel to Rio May 19-28, 2025. • For those who opt out of the travel option, there will be faculty leaders facilitating asynchronous assignments online during the period of travel to continue the cross-cultural learning and interaction with travelers and exposure to Brazilian culture. • Online debriefing May 29-30, 2025. HOW TO ENROLL IN COURSES: The School of Social Work (SSW) will assist students in registering for one of the following courses: SOCW 330 (for undergrads - 6 credits) or SOCW 561 (for grads - 4 credits). Credit will apply to the Spring semester term. The School of Social Work will help with any overrides. Contact Erin Cockrum at cockrum@illinois.edu for an override.
