Intro to Text & Images as Data
Section Info:
This course provides a broad introduction to the principles and tools of large-scale text and image analysis from a political science perspective. No prior experience with text or image data is required; however, students must already be comfortable working in R and should have completed a first-year sequence of graduate level quantitative social science methods courses (or equivalent). The course will introduce students to Python. Topics include maintaining a qualitative sensibility when approaching “big” data, web scraping, data storage, supervised and unsupervised learning, sentiment analysis, word embeddings, object and facial detection/recognition, AI ethics, and more.
