Performance Studies incorporates theories and methods from the performing arts, cultural studies, and communication. This class explores how performance constructs identity and develops community. Using 20th and 21st century case studies as well as local performances, the course teaches concrete frameworks for the study of performance. Students attend local performances—dance, theatre, and music, but also performance in everyday life, sports, public events, and more—analyzing them through writing and class discussion.

In this class, we’ll discover that although anything and everything can be studied as performance, there are particular methods for that study particular political and social investments when studying performance, and particular kinds of performances that are created by and through the study of performance itself. We’ll analyze live performance events in writing and complete a performance research project. This is a hybrid course with both asynchronous, online and live, in-person, synchronous sessions.
