Issues in Sport & Higher Education

Credit: 3 hours.

This course examines the enterprise of intercollegiate athletics in the United States. Its primary focus is the contemporary challenges facing higher education administrators in sustaining a competitive advantage and thriving on a college campus. Course content and readings inspire students to identify critical issues, consider reasonable outcomes, and support recommendations for actionable change.

Section Info:
1st 8-weeks. Course will examine historical foundations and contemporary challenges emanating from athletic programs operating within higher education institutions. An analysis of relevant literature and current media accounts, along with a dialogue from industry leaders will provide a unique insight to the expectations facing the next generation of collegiate administrators. Topics include: Historical Foundations of Intercollegiate Athletics; Fan Engagement in the Evolving Sport Landscape; NCAA Governance Models / Contemporary Issues; Name, Image, & Likeness & the role of the Collective Organization; Financial Management / Capital Programs; Perspectives on Media Rights; Equity Issues and College Athletics; and, Organizational Management Strategies. Students who have completed RST 199 MR (Issues in Sport & Higher Education) should not register for RST 204. While the number is different, the course content is the same. Registering for the new course would be seen as duplicate credit. Duplicate credit does not count toward graduation, and students registering for the duplicate course will be asked to drop. *Eligible for the RST Minor:
