Weekly presentation and discussions of current research by faculty, graduate students and visiting scholars. Sections of these proseminars are offered by each division in the Psychology Department. Requirements include attendance and participation in discussion.

For the first third of the course, the instructor will select 1 article each week for students to read and discuss. For the remaining weeks, students will select articles. These articles can either focus on the Covid pandemic, or another pressing social concern (e.g., the impact of social media on mental health). The goal of the reading group is to leave with a shared understanding of how psychologists understand currently specific social issues (and a shared understanding of why we don't understand more). Students who participate in the reading group will also have the opportunity to take the Public Psychology course in the Spring, in which undergraduate and graduate students work on a research project and dissemination strategies related to a pressing social issue or concern. Although psychological science is considered objective, racism exists within psychological research (Buchanan et al., 2021; Roberts et al., 2020; Roberts & Rizzo, 2021). Antiracism includes a critical understanding of racism, Whiteness, and White privilege, and consistent behaviors that challenge racism (Helms, 2017). “Anti-racist research involves understanding and situating racism within societal systems and policies and conducting research that aims to challenge and eradicate racism. Anti-racist research is thus essential to the work of dismantling systems of racism and oppression” (Wray-Lake et al., 2022, p. 1286). Psych 598 is a multi-year proseminar designed to educate faculty and students on conducting antiracist psychological research.
