FA25 ENGL 564 - Seminar Lit Modes and Genres - Timothy Dean - Publication and Professionalization - The course aims to familiarize graduate students with the genres and conventions of academic writing. The primary text for the course will be Wendy Belcher’s Writing Your Journal Article in Twelve Weeks, a book that guides users week by week, step by step, through the process of revising a draft for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Students who enroll in the course will be provided with a copy of Belcher’s book. In return, they will decide within the first week of classes which one of their own papers to work on for publication. The course serves as more than an academic writing workshop, however. Students will learn how peer-reviewed scholarly journals function and what, in practical terms, makes academic writing publishable. By focusing on how to structure an argument (including how to situate that argument withing contemporary critical debates), students will develop portable tools and techniques for future professional endeavors, whether writing a successful conference paper, drafting an article for publication, composing an abstract, or writing on the larger scale of a dissertation. Ultimately, the course is designed to demystify the process whereby good seminar papers are transformed into journal publications or the basis for dissertations and books. Since the goal is to maximize access to the conventions of academic success, this course will be especially useful for first-generation students. The course will be fun, but it will not be easy. A key component is daily writing. Students need to commit to small bouts of writing for at least 5 days a week throughout the semester. Given this requirement, the course will discuss and put into practice proven techniques for overcoming writer’s block.
