	51768	Lecture-Discussion	D	12:30PM -1:45PM	MW	123 English Building	Rubins, J	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 08/25/25-12/10/25 Section Title: Worldbuilding For Writing Wksp Section Info: FA25 CW 202 - Special Topics in Creative Writing - World Building Workshop for Fiction Story Writing - John Rubins - In this course we will be looking at issues specific to the detailing of fictional worlds in Speculative Fiction. This would include story writing in such genres as Fantasy, Horror, Science Fiction, Magical Realism, and hybrids thereof. To do this, students will be reading published examples of such genres and learning about and discussing the techniques used in those works. Students will also be writing their own, unique, fiction stories based on the techniques and craft learned throughout the semester. In addition, as this is a workshop course, students will be providing feedback to one another in order to help each student writer to improve their stories. What this course is not is a more generalized course that will allow one to design gaming platforms or the worlds as presented in film or other dramatic and visual media. Though not required, it is highly recommended that students have written fictional stories before and/or have taken a fiction story writing workshop previously. Restriction(s): Not intended for students with Freshman class standing. Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
