Section Info:
Organized as a survey, this course seeks to provide a basic introduction to some of the major currents and practitioners in European and American photography from the mid-19th century to the present day. A number of key historical texts that reflect photography's unstable status between technology and aesthetics, and mass culture and the avant-garde will also be examined. The course's key narrative will emphasize the various ways in which photography (in both its analog and digital forms) operates in a space somewhere between art and document. Although discussion begins in the 19th century, emphasis will be placed on 20th and 21st photographic practice. Some seats are reserved for specific A&D majors and some for non-A&D majors. If you receive a "reserve closed" error, all seats for your major are filled, check back on July 18. Any available seats left on July 18 will be made available to all majors.
