Section Info: Meets Summer 2A. Topic: "INTRODUCTION TO PLANETARY MUSIC." In this course, we survey the histories and sounds of six different commercially recorded popular songs from various places around the world. Each song tells an interesting story about the connectedness of our world and about the recording of popular music. You will learn about different topics related to music and society, including the mobility of people, aesthetics, and materials; state politics, war, and political crisis; the persistence of localness in an interconnected world; and the politics of cultural appropriation as related to copyright law, local belief, and power. Another goal of this course is for you to learn to write about sound. Intellectuals across academia have argued that our sense of hearing has been undervalued by society and academia. Students in fields in various parts of the humanities and social sciences are learning about a critique of the ways in which Western modes of knowledge tend to privilege sight over hearing, and these students are learning about how our world is made through the making of and listening to sound. That is something you will learn in this course: that listening can teach us many things. And so we will practice listening. And we will practice writing about listening--about the sensations and stories of sounds.
