2nd-8 weeks. BUSINESS STRATEGIES FOR PROFESSIONAL SPORT ORGANIZATIONS. The Cubs, National Football League (NFL), Nike, and the Olympics—all share a focus on management, marketing, and branding issues across the sports industry. This course examines those issues. Topics include new and established league and team development and marketing strategies, corporate sports sponsorship, broadcasting contracts, licensed merchandise, event management, the role of agents, and athletes as endorsers. The perspective is strategy-based with an orientation to building fans, viewers, sponsorships, and revenues.

Provides participants an in-depth, experiential immersion into the complex issues and constraints that confront international marketing channel participants. Contextually grounded and themed in a specific industry, the course combines on-campus lectures with an intensive international immersion experience to Europe, Asia, or Latin America. By following the complete marketing channel from raw materials procurement to final consumption, participants gain first-hand knowledge of the necessary managerial decision-making skills required to successfully operate in today's global business environment. Course includes travel to Croatia in late May. Students must apply at studyabroad.illinois.edu and be selected to enroll. Email Chaya Sandler (csandle2@illinois.edu) for instructor approval. Outdoor Recreation Consortium
Section Info:
Course Title: Outdoor Recreation Consortium – Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The purpose of the Outdoor Recreation Consortium is to provide students with hands-on exposure to outdoor recreation and natural resource management in the context of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). This course is designed to increase students' understanding and appreciation of outdoor recreation resources, the agencies managing those resources, the management strategies used, and the factors affecting management, including issues related to the nearby “gateway communities” and the park’s surrounding environment. The course format is one that focuses on problem solving, encourages a high level of interaction among participating students, faculty and park managers, and gives participants an opportunity to connect with nature. This course has a non-refundable class fee, and includes a required six-day trip to GSMNP (March 17 to March 22), where students will stay at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute, a nature education center within the park boundaries.

Urban renewal via leisure related industries has emerged as a critical aspect of the contemporary metropolitan landscape with sports events, conventions, hospitality, public recreation, and facility development serving as a focus of wide-ranging regeneration programs and initiatives. Over the course of the Spring semester, a series of industry leaders will be invited to share professional insights gained as a result of the Covid 19 experience at keynote events in Chicago, Urbana-Champaign, and virtually. Their combined message will inspire the next generation of ILLINOIS entrepreneurs and change makers by providing valuable knowledge, motivation and sense of purpose to future professionals.
