Topic: "SOUND AND MATERIAL HISTORY." This course is conceived as a hands-on research lab/workshop which provides students with theoretical pathways and research methods needed for developing stories and histories through sounding and sound-related materials. First, the course will introduce students to the research methodologies of two interconnected disciplines: material cultural studies and sound studies. Students will learn about the methods of through a series of weekly discussions that systematically introduce students to the various methods for studying sonic objects. The second aim of the course is to guide each student on crafting an object study of their own that they will develop and workshop in the class throughout the term. Each student will be asked to identify an object at the intersection of sound and materiality (instruments, technology, books, media, etc.) and make that object the central case study in their semester-long project.
