Section Title:
Viola da Gamba
Section Info:
Topic: "INTRODUCTION TO VIOLA DA GAMBA." Have you ever wanted to learn a historical instrument? Have you ever wondered what it’s like to work with original books and manuscripts from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries? This course offers you the opportunity to do both through the lens of the “viol” (or “viola da gamba”). You will not only learn about the broader cultural history of this instrument within and beyond Europe, but you will also gain skills in playing the instrument yourself. Our time will be divided between interactive lectures focused on representative works, central figures, and practices of the viol as well as studio sessions focusing on elementary techniques and ensemble playing. Lectures and visits to the Rare Book and Manuscript Library will be strongly geared towards learning to read old scripts and printed text as well as “reading” historical images. Throughout the semester you will work in small ensembles (“consorts”), culminating in an end-of-semester performance informed by your collective research. No previous experience in string playing is required.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students in the Music department.
