Section Title:
The Symmetric Group
Section Info:
Topic: The Symmetric Group. This topics course is directed at undergraduates who have an interest in either algebra or combinatorics, and have taken math 416 and 417. The course covers combinatorial representation theory as applied to the symmetric (permutation) group and will include the following topics: (1) Review of basic group theory; (2) Finite group representations: character theory, Schur's Lemma, restriction and induction (3) Combinatorial constructions: Young tableaux, Specht modules and the basic combinatorial rules of symmetric group representations; (4) Some important combinatorial algorithms, in particular the RSK algorithm, which has many new applications and generalizations. The highlight of this course is this last part, algorithmic solutions to basic questions in symmetric group representations. This will give students a chance to use their programming skills to implement the algorithms.
