This class will serve as an introduction to the design, development and evaluation of a range of assistive technologies. This course provides students with interdisciplinary training in assistive technology. Students will learn about specific disabilities and their impact on major life activities, become familiar with current legislation relating to assistive technology, gain experience with a range of assistive technology devices and products, learn a theoretical framework from which to make AT assessment and intervention decisions, and determine how to match appropriate assistive technology options with individual consumer needs and preferences. Among other things, we consider how and why particular forms of physical and ‘popular’ culture (including but not limited to fitness, sport, and other forms of physical activity) are constructed and 'consumed' in particular ways, why people participate in some and not others, and how understanding physical culture – its role(s) and its influence – can help us to better understand the subtle and explicit ways that certain ideologies are privileged, and social inequalities (e.g. race, class, & gender) are perpetuated.
