Information Policy

This seminar introduces information policy for information professionals through the analysis of concepts and issues in four main areas: ensuring access to information; controlling access to information; ensuring diversity of information; and preventing harmful information. Topics can include privacy, scholarly communication, social media sharing, online harassment, Library 2.0, the right to be forgotten, and more. The course covers information policy in U.S. and global contexts; the policy process and stakeholders; how individual policies influence information creation and access; and how librarians and other information professionals participate in policy development. Deliverables: Class Participation (10%); Engagement in Discourse & Essay (20%); Hot Topic Presentation (30%); Policy Analysis Memorandum (40%).

Topics will include: managerial authority and power; staff coaching, feedback, and communication; performance evaluations and progressive discipline; recruitment, interviewing, and selection; job creation and development; and compensation and motivation. This course will also review Human Resources law related to Equal Employment Opportunity, Family and Medical Leave Act, Exempt status, and others.
