Credit: 3 hours.

This course surveys the history of gender formations in the United States to 1877. Although it pays some attention to manhood and masculinity, it focuses on the history of women from a variety of social groups and on gender ideas pertaining to women. Throughout, it considers the ways gender intersected with categories such as race and class as it placed women of different backgrounds in differential positions.
