SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

History of Chicago and Illinois from prehistoric times to the present, illustrating the jarring conflicts and great achievements of peoples from all over the world. Politics, economics, popular and high culture, education, mass media, racial problems, and ethnic diversity are especially featured. There is an emphasis on the relation of city, state, and region to one another.

Section Info: Description: This survey of Illinois history focuses on processes of development and change that formed the population, economy, culture, and social relations of the state, its principle city, Chicago, as well as many of its formative towns and rural areas, especially during the last two hundred years. The course considers the state's Native American roots and goes on to analyze the creation of a multi-ethnic and multi-racial society through immigration, internal migration, and the changing economic and social relations migrants and their descendants produced. We will also examine ways in which Illinois provides examples of wider historical processes affecting the United States. Readings include many primary documents from the state's history as well as a narrative text, book-length monographs, articles addressing important dimensions of Illinois history, and at least one novel. Assessment will be based on class participation, mid-term and final exams, a paper, and written responses to primary sources.
