Credit: 3 hours.

Situates family food decisions amid social positions such as race, class, gender, and sexuality. We will consider how food can be used to express identities and connect to others, but also differentiate, exclude, and disparage those who are "not like us." Through these investigations we will learn about how family food practices are shaped by social norms, institutions, and policies in areas like education, media, immigration, neighborhood zoning, and health and social services.

Prerequisite: There are no formal pre-requisites for this class, but HDFS 105 or another 100- or 200-level Social and Behavioral Science general education course is strongly recommended.
