SP24 - ENGL 505 - Writing Studies - Peter Mortensen - This seminar has been offered almost every year for nearly three decades, and in that time its description has remained unchanged: “Reviews theory and research on the social and historical development of writing systems, including consideration of the relationship between oral and written language, writing and other graphic representation systems, alternative technologies, the evolution of writing systems, and the social functions of literacy.” Through reading, research, discussion, and writing, we’ll explore the contours of Writing Studies today, evaluate the past referenced in the 1994 course description, and speculate about the future that new Writing Studies graduate students will shape with their scholarship.
