At its core, contemporary ballet stems from "classical" ballet vocabulary but simultaneously resists and deviates from its traditions. This class will explore non-gender-specific partnering work and the increasingly popular phenomenon of "sneaker ballets" to create new choreography that centers connection, collaboration, and improvisation within a contemporary ballet framework. We will look at the choreographies and processes of artists such as Jehbreal Jackson, Justin Peck, William Forsythe, Katy Pyle/Ballez, Adriana Pierce, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and others to contextualize our work. Above all, we will seek to develop new relationships with ballet traditions and with each other in the studio. Please note that previous partnering experience is not required, but dancers should be excited about and comfortable exploring contact and weight-sharing with others.
