The course will cover a broad range of aspects surrounding both formative and summative assessment. Topics covered will include: studies and cognitive models around retrieval practice, a range of pedagogies of assessment (e.g., clickers, collaborative annotation), question design, item generation, item response theory, giving feedback, grading schemes (e.g., competency-based), concept inventories, collaborative work/team formation, peer assessment, automation, and cheating. While the class will have a theoretical focus (understanding and reasoning about research results), the hope is that it will also inform the participants' future teaching practice. The course will primarily consist of reading papers, writing short paper summaries, in-class paper discussions, and a small project, but we will endeavor to utilize some of the techniques that we are learning about in the course.
