Section Title:
Writing in Graduate School
Section Info:
Communication researchers write, but tend not to think of themselves as writers. Graduate students train as researchers, but their training seldom involves systematic attention to writing. This course invites students to explore what it means to think of themselves as writers. We will identify and learn from models of scholarly writing in different areas of the field; explore and try out writing practices that foster creativity and productivity; and dissect key genres of scholarly writing (e.g., the journal article). Students will complete a number of short assignments across the term, and a final assignment will ask them to apply what they have learned to an ongoing research project of their own. The course will give students valuable tools for developing as a writer in graduate school and beyond. This seminar is designed for all graduate students in the Department of Communication, regardless of area, and is especially appropriate for early-career students still in coursework.
Restriction(s):

Health Care Communication
Section Info:
This course unpacks the communicative processes constituting health care communication, including patient-centered care; family-centered care; and medical education accreditation core competencies of interpersonal and communication skills, patient care, and professionalism. These processes include interviewing, information sharing, decision making, having difficult conversations, and expressing empathy. Throughout the course, attention will be given to the cultural significance of the patient-provider relationship; conversation, relational, and health outcomes associated with clinical encounters; and health care disparities and inequalities.

Section Title:
Measurement in Comm Research
Section Info:
The value of quantitative scholarship depends on the quality of the measures that investigators use to conduct their research. This course examines the theoretical reasoning and statistical principles that govern measurement. The course is designed to cultivate the conceptual and statistical skills necessary for operationalizing constructs. The first part of the class will focus on how to formulate a conceptual definition of a construct. Then, the class will examine measurement issues associated with both continuous variables and categorical variables. Specific topics include reliability, validity, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, physiological measures, content analysis, and coding and rating schemes. Assignments will require students to grapple with measurement issues relevant to their own scholarship. The course is open to graduate students interested in all domains of quantitative research. Familiarity with linear regression procedures is required.

Section Title:
Language, Culture & Identity
Section Info:
We will discuss how people use language in ways that signal a range of interactional and socio-cultural meanings. We will explore a number of classic and contemporary approaches that address how language use both seems to “reflect” and create interpersonal and sociocultural contexts.More specifically, we will cover a range of approaches to the study of the relationships between language use and processes of social identification, often understood in terms of seemingly more durable, broader-level rubrics, such as ethnicity, race, class, gender, sexuality, the nation-state, diaspora, generation, etc. Although no previous background is required for this course, students must be willing, however, to read, synthesize, and discuss material from a range of disciplines.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
