eDNA Sampling for Conservation
Section Info:
eDNA SAMPLING FOR CONSERVATION: This field and laboratory-based course will cover the foundations and applications of environmental DNA (eDNA), an innovative genetics-based tool transforming how we sample species. Using eDNA methods we can identify the presence of animals and plants without ever needing to physically capture or hold the individual. The first half of the course will, through weekly field trips, introduce students to field techniques to sample and collect eDNA in different environments. We will focus on sampling eDNA from water, air, soil, and plant substrates. The second half of the course will be lab-based where students learn basic laboratory protocols processing eDNA and basic statistical approaches for analyzing eDNA data. All lab work will be performed at the Natural Resources Studies Annex instead of the classroom in Turner Hall. This course will culminate in a short proposal and presentation where the students develop their own idea for a research study involving eDNA methods. This section will have a course fee of $100.

Owl Migration & Education
Section Info:
We will conduct research on the migration of Northern Saw-whet Owls in central Illinois. The students will be part of the research in which we capture, band, and attach radio transmitters to owls. The students will also learn about automated radio telemetry and how to analyze large telemetry datasets. Students will learn the basic principles of scientific communication and will design and host outreach events for the public regarding the ecology and conservation of Northern Saw-whet Owls. As owls are nocturnal, this course will be in the evenings on weeknights, with some meetings on campus and some at natural areas 30-45 minutes from campus. There will be some weeks in which the research will be conducted on two nights and the students can pick which night they want to attend. Transportation will be provided to off-campus sites. This section will have a field trip fee of $60. Once all seats in the course are filled, you can add yourself to the waiting list by completing the form at http://go.illinois.edu/NRESwaitinglist.
