Field Experience

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 1 OR 2 hours.

Field based course that exposes students to procedures and methods used in various resource settings in a hands-on manner. Includes weekly field trips to visit representative natural resource and environmental science settings with supporting laboratory exercises. Content of offerings vary by section, but all focus on resource management, environmental quality and assessment, and effects of consumption and use on the environment. Field trips required.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. May be repeated in separate semesters to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: NRES 201 and NRES 219.

Section Info: Fish & Wildlife Field Techniques meets in person three Wednesday evenings in April at 6 p.m. and May 15-19, 2023 (students are responsible for their own housing). Field work will occur at Allerton Park in Monticello, IL (transportation provided) and we will spend one night on-site in 4H housing. This course will introduce students to techniques used in monitoring and research within the disciplines of fishery resources and wildlife ecology/management. We will focus on survey methods including sampling, capturing, handling and marking wildlife (mammals, birds, fish, aquatic invertebrates, amphibians, and reptiles). The field exercises will allow students to gain exposure and hands-on experience with commonly used techniques. The students will also use data from the monitoring to provide a group presentation on developing a monitoring protocol for a specific taxa. This section will have a field trip fee of $95. Credit: 2 hours Section Title: Lrg River Floodplain Field Exp Section Info: Section LRF: Large River Floodplain Field Experience. This course will meet April 6, 13, 20, and 27 for classroom instruction and will culminate in a field experience from May 15-19, 2023 at the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) in East Alton, IL. The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center, located at the confluence of the Mississippi, Illinois, and Missouri Rivers, is offering this one-week summer field course focused on large river floodplain ecology. Students will work directly in large river floodplain ecosystems, which generally consist of a mosaic of land and water containing bottomland forests, grasslands, islands, backwaters, sloughs, side channels, and wetlands. Students will learn how historic management practices have impacted these river systems, and how current science-based approaches to management and ecological restoration are impacting river health and sustainability. Monitoring the biological and physical components of riverine habitats is a key part of this process, and students will become familiar with the types of quantitative assessments common to the field of river ecology. This section will have a field trip fee of $125. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from East Alton at the beginning and end of the field experience. Learning and application of techniques will occur via instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practicing at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center (DSAC). There are three required on-campus meetings prior to the field dates during spring break. There is a field trip fee for this section. Section Info: Sustainability iCAP-Ambassador Experience: While top-down sustainability approaches are important, it is necessary to understand how sustainability can be applied from the bottom-up, particularly in buildings. This course seeks to connect students with facility managers and building services workers to help in identifying iCAP goals and objectives that have been achieved and opportunities for future implementation. Students will gain an understanding of campus sustainability themes and will work throughout the semester to apply this knowledge to help advance iCAP topics. Lectures will occur as a hybrid model (in-person and virtual), but field work will require students to be on campus with the ability to visit campus buildings and meet with university staff.
