Section Title:
Music of the 1980s
Section Info:
Topic: "MUSIC OF THE 1980s." From Michael Jackson to Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie to Ozzy Osborne, Run-DMC to Naked Raygun, John Adams to Laurie Anderson, music in 1980s America explored a variety of topics, technologies, and performance practices. Fueled by the conservative economic policies of the Reagan-era and the global rise of free-market economics, American musicians of this decade were keenly connected to politics, both benefiting from and arguing against consumerism. Musicians of the decade also made use of increasingly inexpensive and portable sound and film technology, leading to an emergent cassette culture and the rise of music videos on television networks like MTV. This course will consider several key musicians, works, technologies, and political contexts that shaped the decade as well as the contemporary nostalgia for cultural products of the 1980s. In addition, we will explore contemporary historiographic methods, including archival and oral history methodologies, to reconstruct the recent past. Students will prepare weekly assigned readings, listening examples, film examples; write response papers to key readings; and create a final research dossier on a chosen topic.
