Music and Performace
Section Info:
Topic: "INTRO TO THE VIOLA DA GAMBA." Once hailed as the perfect imitator of the human voice, the viola da gamba (or viol) was pervasive in European lives and musics of the 16th to 18th centuries. In this course, students will not only learn about the history of this instrument, but also how to play it. Our time will be divided between sessions focused on representative works, central figures and practices (and their regional and global contexts), as well as hands-on sessions focusing on elementary techniques and ensemble (consort) playing. Assignments will include the keeping of a learning journal, the writing of a research-based concert program, and the preparation of a “pre-concert” talk. Students will be provided an instrument (a treble, tenor, or bass) and bow from the Musicology Collection and are responsible for their maintenance. While this course is open to students of any performance background, proficiency with western notation is a requirement.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students in the Music department.
