Section Info:
This course explores eighteenth-century German literature through texts with protagonists who are travelers, warriors, and murderers. These figures embody the clash between Enlightenment ideals and social and political realities. We will investigate the representation of gender, class, and race in a variety of genres such as fiction, autobiography, drama, travel narratives, and essays. We will start the semester with Wilhelm Meister’s journey of Bildung, continue with narratives of travel and emigration (Virginia oder die Kolonie von Kentucky), and conclude with portrayals of warfare and assassinations in the wake of the French Revolution (Penthesilea, Bekenntnisse einer Giftmischerin). Our readings will be supplemented with theoretical writings on these topics and secondary literature on these texts.
