Medieval German Literature: This course will explore medieval German literature from between the 12th and 13th centuries. We will be reading texts from across a wide array of genres, including courtly love poetry (Minnesang), Arthurian romance, short stories, and religious texts. Key themes will be sexuality and gender, performativity, aristocratic and popular culture, and secular and religious culture. While the course will be taught in English and does not necessarily require a knowledge of German, we will also be incorporating some training in Middle High German, to allow us to directly engage with and dive deeper into this rich body of literature.
