Section Title:
Collab Learn: Rsrch & Theories
Section Info:
While research on collaboration indicates that it can be productive pedagogic strategy for both learning and problem solving, it is rarely used in classrooms (and often disliked by students). During this course, we will explore the research on collaborative learning, to understand what we know about it as a pedagogic strategy, what the limitations of the research are when it comes to implementing it in classrooms, and how current directions in the field, and in computer-supported collaborative learning, might be used to further our understanding of the complex nature of collaborative learning in classroom environments. Topics will include basic research on collaborative learning, differences between cooperative and collaborative learning, the role of teachers in the collaborative classroom, supporting collaboration practices within groups, and current research on computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). The course will take a critical approach to the literature to build an understanding of the state of this field, and class sessions will include different types of collaborative learning activities.
