Race & Digital Studies
Section Info:
This course focuses on understanding how different conceptions and ideas about race and racial identity shape and are shaped by digital technology. It takes a global perspective with special focus on the Global South and introduces students to how different theories and concepts from intersectionality, postcoloniality, and decoloniality are used to think critically about utilizing digital technology as a catalyst for social justice addressing racial and economic inequalities in society. The class will discuss topics such as postcolonial computing, decolonizing AI, data coloniality, responsible AI, AI for development (AI4D) and so forth. ***This topics course requires a sophomore level standing or above, students should have taken IS 101: Introduction to Information Sciences and IS 202: Social Aspects of Technology. Social Systems Dynamics
Section Info:
Restricted to IS Majors initially, INFO Minors may register starting June 30th by noon, then restricted to IS majors and INFO Minors until noon on July 12th. Social systems are natural networks of interaction within a social sphere. Complex dynamical systems theory can be used to better understand social systems. The course begins with an exploration of Cognitive Science at the level of the brain and scales upward to small and large societies. This course is intended for student from all academic backgrounds. Math topics are taught conceptually, but students may choose to complete more computationally rigorous projects.
