Section Title:
Gender and Human Rights
Section Info:
Building on the connections between politics, gender, and culture, this course examines the institutional mechanisms that have either contributed to or addressed some gender-based human rights violations, stateside and abroad. It begins by asking: How can human rights serve as a framework to understand the political participation of gender minorities, gender-based violence, bodily integrity, and gender justice? What role do the United Nations and transnational human rights movements play? More specifically, it delves into cases of: missing and murdered indigenous women; international LGBTQ rights; racial profiling of black men; and the social construction of Arab/Muslim men as “terrorists”. Use this course as an opportunity to learn about the critical components of an effective human rights campaign and develop one of your own!
