Examination of the social context, function and meaning of music/music-making in one or more communities, from one or more areas of the world, in one or more time periods. May address music in relation to such social issues as gender and sexualities, ethnicity, politics, etc.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours if topic varies. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314, and junior standing in music; or consent of instructor.

Section Info:
TOPIC: "Women in American Music." This course will examine the role of women in American music composition, performance, and education since the nineteenth century. Composers studied will include Amy Beach, Ruth Crawford, Florence Price, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Tania Leon, and Julia Wolfe. Additionally, we will look at gender and music patronage in American cultural institutions to the present. This course will take place fully online and asynchronously using Canvas. Meets with MUS 522.
