SP22 ENGL 373 - Topic: Absurd Realism in the Cinema of the Coen Brothers Over the last 40 years, Joel and Ethan Coen (The Coen Brothers), have become two of the most discussed, controversial, and influential filmmakers of the modern era. The Coens seem to enjoy taking genre film formulas and subverting those formulas. Their characters seem distinctly American, and their idiosyncratic filmmaking style offers repetitious story structures, bizarre dialogue, precision camerawork, and uncomfortably dark humor. By interrogating films such as Fargo, The Big Lebowski, and No Country for old Men, we will attempt to engage not only with the manifest messages of the Coen’s cinema, but also with the absurdities about our society and ourselves that their cinema seems to embody. The course will meet twice a week in a lab format. Generally speaking, we will watch films on one day and discuss them on the next. Requirements will include two exams, three essay-length film reviews, and active, engaged class participation. Films will include: Blood Simple (1984), Raising Arizona (1987), Miller’s Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1992), The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), Fargo (1996), The Big Lebowski (1998), O Brother Where Art Thou? (2000), The Man Who Wasn’t There (2001), No Country for Old Men (2007), A Serious Man (2009), True Grit (2010), and Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)
