Description: When thinking of Mexico, powerful images, notions, and stereotypes come to our mind. Some of these stereotypes about “Lo Mexicano” have a long history, beginning in 1519. This course uses the tools of historians to investigate how these stereotypes came into being and how they got recycled over time through different agents. What was the role of Spaniards in shaping these notions about Mexican people? Can we rescue native perceptions through colonial codices? How did the indigenous dream of land evolve? What were the consequences of the state’s attempt to create a mestizo identity that binds together a nation? For all those who are interested in learning how to understand the evolution of stereotypes and how to question them, this course will teach them that Mexico is and has always been not one but “many Mexicos.” Course materials include secondary sources as well as primary documents, literature, paintings, and film.
