Section Title:
Language transfer in L3 acquis
Section Info:
TOPIC TITLE: Language transfer in L3 acquisition When languages come into contact in the mind they interact. We know that the native language plays a role in early stages of L2 acquisition, usually affecting the structure of the target language, especially at early stages of interlanguage development. This is known as language transfer. The nature of language transfer and its mechanisms has been a key topic in facilitating or limiting second language acquisition. But what happens when we learn a third, a fourth or an nth language? How do all these sources of linguistic knowledge interact in multilingual acquisition? Which language transfers, and when, how, and why? This seminar offers an overview of current theoretical models of third language (L3) acquisition. As we tackle these questions we will discuss conceptual and empirical problems associated with all these current models and the latest empirical research. Students will come up with new experimental studies to test the predictions of these current theoretical models and tease apart the explanatory adequacy and advantages of one or some over others.
