Contact varieties in French and Romance: A methodological approach. This course will focus on selected studies of the production and perception sociolinguistics variation in French and major Romance languages through the analysis of the methodologies and results published in these papers. We will learn matched-guise and implicit bias techniques to study phonetic variation and basic search methods and statistical techniques (from chi-square to regression methods and discriminant analysis) to study lexical variation in larger corpora. Knowledge of programing is not required but access to DMDX, R studio, and SPSS will be necessary. Taught in French and English, with readings in French, English, and other major Romance languages. Pre-requisite: some form of introduction to Linguistics and/or Sociolinguistics.
