SP22 ENGL 563 Topic Section: Science Fiction and the Medical Posthumanities In this seminar, we will focus on contagion and plague--especially cross-species infection--in science fiction from several nations and regions. Although most “literary” texts treat contagion as a backdrop for localized human suffering, science fiction has generally represented it as a global matter affecting humans and nonhumans alike--in other words, as ecological. We will examine this topic through canonical works by Mary Shelly (The Last Man), H. G. Wells (The Shape of Things to Come), Jack London (The Scarlet Plague), J. G. Ballard (The Crystal World), Amitav Ghosh (The Calcutta Chromosone), Kim Stanley Robinson (Aurora), and others. Most of the course, however, will feature lesser-known, contemporary texts by, for example, Larissa Lai (Tiger Flu), Ling Ma (Severance), Emily St. John Mandel (Station Eleven), and Nnedi Okorafor (“Spider the Artist”). The seminar should be of interest to people working in the medical humanities, animal studies, and ecocriticism.
