SP22 ENGL 547, Seminar Earlier American Lit This course surveys the literature and cultural history of the United States in the long nineteenth century. Our primary texts for the semester may include works by Phillis Wheatley, David Walker, Henry David Thoreau, Herman Melville, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Henry James, and others. As a class we will sample recent scholarly research in and around 19th-century U.S. literary studies from a wide variety of fields and theoretical commitments, and with a special focus on research in ecocriticism and the environmental humanities. Students in the class will learn and explore different genres of academic writing, including abstracts, conference papers, journal articles, and essays for wider public audiences.
