SP22 CWL 267 - What makes a good story? This course will focus on the ways that scholars, writers, and creators have answered that question over time as well as how we—as readers and storytellers ourselves—might answer it. We will survey the short story (American and European) from the 19th century to the present, reading short texts from a variety of sociocultural contexts and genres. Our focus throughout the semester will be both the content of these texts (historically contextualized and with an emphasis on cultural impact then and now) and the conventions, style, and craft of the short story as it has developed over time.
