Section Title: Race and Food Security Section Info: "Black Cultural Studies: This course engages Black Cultural Studies as a political and intellectual enterprise within the context of globalization and the African diaspora. Using an interdisciplinary humanistic approach, this course draws on sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, communications and media, literary criticism, history, and public intellectualism to engage the various concepts, theories, and methods in this growing field. It also uses Black popular culture and media as sites of intellectual activism, knowledge production, and an alternative academy. Throughout the semester, the instructor and students will bring in various forms of Black culture to facilitate and engage course readings, themes, and concepts. Topics to be discussed include but are not limited to: identity, culture, gender, sexuality, class, labor, music, cultural production, visual arts, representation, counterculture, socioeconomic inequalities, political movements, and regionalism. The course expands across North America, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe. Particular focus will be given to the United States and Brazil. All readings are in English."
