Advanced studio course designed to integrate basic sculpture and other 3-D studio skills with advanced knowledge of contemporary sculptural practices and materials, along with an understanding of concepts and theories influencing contemporary sculptural art. Studies will investigate topics including site specificity, context, and criticality as they develop research and studio production methods that allow them to generate work that is relevant to current and future discourse in the field.

3 undergraduate hours. No graduate credit. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite: ARTS 280 and ARTS 281; junior standing.

Advanced Sculpture Special Topic: Trace/Time/Terrain. This course will focus on aspects of place and time through a sampling of recent writing and films that examine ideas about historical and biological entanglement ecologies, the thick present, speculative futures, geological time scales, deep time, pandemic time, loss, extinctions, hauntology, and other relevant ideas that help us navigate this unfolding moment of cultural and environmental chaos. Using 2D, 3D, and 4D methods, we’ll make the objects, relics, artifacts, props, maps, collections, dioramas, and environments that will culminate in a series of highly detailed installations that tell stories about place across various modalities of time, speculative narratives, histories, materiality, and memory. Artists and designers of all kinds are needed to contribute a multiplicity of background experiences, expertise, and material strategies. This class is open to all A&D majors or A&D minors with a minimum of junior standing. Graduate students should enroll in the ARTS 591 section, for 4 credits. Graduate students from units across FAA are welcomed and encouraged!
