Section Title:
Art Arch Ancient Mediterranean
Section Info:
Topic: Art & Architecture of Ancient Mediterranean. From the builders of the pyramids at Giza to the inhabitants of the elaborately decorated palace of Knossos, the eastern Mediterranean was home to some of the world’s earliest complex societies or “civilizations”. This course surveys the art and archaeology of some of these emergent cultures in Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Aegean, and elsewhere, from their Neolithic origins to the end of the Bronze Age (c. 1200 BCE), defined by a period of increased “international” contact through seafaring. This course investigates how and why these state-level societies developed, their appearance and structure, the objects, monuments, and buildings they produced using a remarkable variety of materials and technologies, and mechanisms of cultural exchange like trade and warfare. A comparative perspective will illustrate what these early civilizations have in common and the ways in which they are unique, as well as their influence on one another.
