Vergil’s Georgics: The Georgics of Vergil have been called “the best poem by the best poet.” Nominally a farming handbook in verse, the poem is in fact nothing near so mundane. In this class we will read the entirety of book 4, which begins with instructions on the keeping of bees before ultimately digressing into the famous recounting of the mythological tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. Attention will be paid to reading Vergil’s Latin with pleasure and understanding. Selections from earlier books of the poem will also be read.
