Section Title:
Intro to Transportation
Section Info:
Synchronous online lecture. Transportation planning is undergoing a major revolution. From emerging technologies and travel modes to new waves of societal impacts, the field faces an ever-evolving set of challenges and opportunities. In light of these shifts, this course will prepare students to engage in meaningful dialogue about the following types of questions: What does our transportation system look like today, and how did we get here? How do people make decisions about travel? What are the collective impacts of these decisions on the environment, the economy, social equity, congestion, public health and safety, and overall sense of community? Will autonomous vehicles simply encourage more driving, or can they be harnessed in a way that supports wider community goals? How do we design streets that are safe for travelers of all modes, ages, and abilities? Through a combination of interactive discussions, case studies, and hands-on activities, students will be encouraged to think critically and creatively about these questions and about the role of transportation planners in creating positive change for communities.
